“I was fortunate to find college adviser Barbara Cooper when my son was ready to apply for college. Although he was enrolled in a prestigious public high school, he consistently underperformed. With a C- average, very few colleges would be interested in him, despite his fine essay, interesting internships, and high SAT scores. Of course, being a teenager he was in denial and did not understand the consequences of not having handed in homework for 3 years. He was also sensitive about discussing such things.
Barbara worked so well with him. Somehow, she made him feel better, not worse, about himself, because of her genuine enthusiasm about his talents. CUNY was indeed very interested in my son. Perhaps they've seen many city kids who do poorly in high school go on to excel in college. Two CUNY colleges extended a welcome, one even offering financial incentives. My son chose Hunter, and he has done well there, finally learning how to study, how to do well. After maintaining a B+ average overall, this past semester he had all A's and one A+, to his great satisfaction. He has a year left to go. I am eternally grateful to Barbara for helping us navigate this wonderful, difficult passage.”
